If you have captured a stray rabbit or have a stray rabbit in your neighborhood, please click HERE for tips on how to catch a stray. Please note that any domestic rabbits left outside are NOT SAFE - even if you are feeding them, it is only a matter of time before they fall prey to a hawk, owl, fox or other animal and will die a horrible death. If you cannot bring them into your home, a garage or shed is better than being left outside. Exception to the above policy is any rabbits CFHRS adopted to you are to come back to us if they are no longer wanted, as stated in the adoption contract. A word about local Animal Control Shelters: There are no Animal Control Shelters in North Carolina who are truly "no-kill", but if you are lucky enough to live in the Charlotte area, Charlotte-Mecklenberg County Animal Control spays, neuters and adopts out rabbits. Most all of their healthy rabbit surrenders are adopted. Wake County Animal Control in Raleigh does not spay and neuter, but we have HRS educators working with that shelter and they are making a huge effort to save every rabbit surrendered to them. This is not true, unfortunately, in the outlying counties. However, if you are unable or unwilling to make the effort to rehome your rabbit yourself, please do take the rabbit to your local Animal Control where if he is not adopted out, he will be humanely euthanized. This is vastly preferable to being turned loose outside. |
