Baby Wild Rabbit

It’s baby rabbit season again – if you or your dog discover baby wild rabbits here is what to do:

1. If the rabbit or rabbits are not injured, their best chance of survival is for you to put them back in the wild in a safe place(under shrubbery, etc) – ideally the nest if you know where it is. If the nest area was destroyed by construction or animals, move it to a safe location – the mother rabbit is nearby and watching – she will find the nest and the babies. You will NOT see her – she only feeds them at night.

2. If you keep the baby and try to feed it – it’s chances of survival are very slim, it is also illegal to keep wildlife in the state of North Carolina

3. If the rabbit is injured, you need to get in touch with a licensed wildlife rehabilitator (I am not one). The best in this area is Beth Havener – her phone number is 910-283-4280 – her website is www.wildlifebabies.com
